Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for All Skin Tones?
May 12, 2026 · By Paige Erickson, DNP, FNP-C

For years, laser hair removal came with an asterisk: it worked beautifully on light skin with dark hair, but people with deeper skin tones were often told they weren't candidates — or worse, were treated with the wrong device and left with burns or discoloration. That history still makes a lot of people hesitant. The good news is that the technology has changed, and at Ren Aesthetics & Wellness in Ogden, UT, laser hair removal is safe and effective for every skin tone.
Why older lasers struggled with darker skin
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin — the pigment that gives both hair and skin their color. The laser's energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle and converted to heat, which disables the follicle's ability to grow new hair. The problem with many older systems is that they couldn't tell the difference between pigment in the hair and pigment in the skin. On darker skin, that meant the surrounding skin absorbed too much energy, raising the risk of burns, blistering, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
How Aerolase® changes the equation
We use Aerolase® technology, which is designed to be safe across the full range of skin tones — Fitzpatrick types I through VI. Rather than relying on aggressive energy that the skin can absorb, it delivers energy in a way that targets the follicle while protecting the surrounding skin. That means clients who were previously told they couldn't have laser hair removal can finally get smooth, lasting results — comfortably and safely.
What to expect from treatment
Because hair grows in cycles, no single session can catch every follicle. Most clients need a series of about six to eight treatments, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve the best long-term reduction. The number varies by body area and by individual hair growth, so your provider will tailor a plan to you.
How to prepare
- Shave the treatment area the day before your appointment.
- Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading between sessions — the follicle needs to be intact for the laser to target it.
- Stay out of the sun and skip self-tanner before treatment.
- Arrive with clean skin, free of lotions, deodorant, or makeup in the area.
Is it permanent?
Laser hair removal delivers long-lasting hair reduction. Most clients see a dramatic, lasting decrease in hair growth, with the hair that does return often growing back finer and sparser. Occasional maintenance sessions keep results looking smooth over time.
